Communal indie rock band Membership releases new single “Scandalous” off their debut EP

Hailing from Filipinotown, Los Angeles, Membership is a four-piece indie rock band which takes a uniquely collaborative approach to making and performing their music. Their new track “Scandalous” is the second song off their debut EP Tasteful Exploitation; an energetic and bouncy single featuring engaging rhythmic production.

Membership’s idiosyncratic approach to making music is informed by their emphasis on community and, as their band name suggests, collaborative “membership.” With performances that blur the line between performer and audience, everyone is invited to get in on the act. “Scandalous” even features vocals from some of the bands most ardent fans.

Sonically, the track is a lot more groovy than your typical indie rock song, playing into pulsing dance elements meant to get the crowd moving. The boppy jazz-inflected verses explode into the laidback strained-scream-shout approach typical of bright indie pop anthems.

The track is full of surprises. At moments falling on spoken word only to break out into emotive group vocals and unorthodox instrumental breakdowns, surprise features seemingly from the rafters. At its heart, “Scandalous” is exactly what it set out to be: a fun and engaging indie pop track just waiting for the party to happen around it.

Membership’s debut EP Tasteful Exploitation is out today and you can stream “Scandalous” now. They will also be holding a DIY rooftop show in downtown LA on March 29th dedicated to their EP release.
