CMAGIC5 puts a dark spin on fairytale romances with “Happy Never After”

Date:

She is known as a “rock girl in a pop world,” but CMAGIC5 is gradually becoming a fierce artist with more than playful pop-rock anthems to offer. Over the past year, CMAGIC5 has racked up over 10M streams and 2M monthly listeners on Spotify alone. She also had a great festival run, winning “Best Performance” at the Gussapolooza Music Festival in Canada and “Best Pop” for her song “Rock Paper Scissors” at the 2024 IPMAs in Rhode Island. So, not only do her catchy songs impress listeners, but her sophisticated vocals and dynamic stage shows do too. CMAGIC5 then ended the year by opening for Simple Plan at their New Year’s Eve show at Garden Square in Brampton, Ontario. On that note, CMAGIC5 is poised to have a great 2025, and she kicks things off with “Happy Never After.”

Inspired by a need to shatter the illusion of a perfect fairytale romance, CMAGIC5 formed the ultimate breakup single with “Happy Never After.” She used a combination of her own experiences and various stories of toxic relationships to form the witty lyrics, where she calls the antagonist of the song “a total narcissistic tool” and “a waste of good mascara.” All the while, the lively pop-punk melodies beg listeners to sing along, even encouraging them to yell when CMAGIC5 shouts, “Oh no, not another Romeo!” in the choruses.

The music video for the track, which you can find below, really leans into the twisted fairytale vibe of the single. It is full of whimsy, taking us to a land of broken-down carnival props, oversized chess pieces, and floating playing cards. Viewers will instantly be reminded of Alice in Wonderland or Beetlejuice, especially when it comes to the overall plot of the video. These films evoke a strong desire to escape, and CMAGIC5 can be seen trying to escape from the idea of true love, as embodied by the “Mad Hatter” character. In the end, CMAGIC5 helps promote self-empowerment by defeating the allure of true love and taking control of the next chapter of her life.
