In his latest solo offering, “Call Me When You Know Better,” Calum Hood dives deeper into the storm of vulnerability that defines his debut solo album, ORDER chaos ORDER, out June 13 via Capitol Records. Following the emotionally rich “Don’t Forget You Love Me,” this new single affirms Hood’s transformation from bassist in a stadium-filling pop-rock band (5 Seconds of Summer) to a soul-baring singer-songwriter forging a sonic identity of his own.

Where “Don’t Forget You Love Me” served as the album’s emotional cornerstone, “Call Me When You Know Better” becomes its sonic breakthrough. The track, developed with Jackson Phillips (Day Wave), finds a tense balance in fluid and fractured, restrained yet emotionally overwhelming, mirroring the mental tug-of-war at the heart of the lyrics.

Framed as a love letter in the form of an apology, the song dissects the messiness of regret and self-awareness. Hood admits to emotional shortcomings with heartbreaking clarity: “Thoughts contradicting one another, talking over each other and stretching reality.” There’s a mature acceptance of accountability here, one that stings but ultimately frees. It’s less of a plea for forgiveness and more of an honest unpacking of past wrongs—less performance, more confession.

Vocally, Hood leans into his signature low, rich tone, delivering each line with a bruised sincerity. It’s a performance that feels less like a song and more like a voice memo never meant to be heard—intimate, unpolished, and deeply affecting.
