After a three year wait from the release of To Let a Good Thing Die in 2020, British singer-songwriter Bruno Major has returned with the “We Were Never Really Friends” and a spate of international tour dates in 2023, and the promise of more to come this year.
“We Were Never Really Friends” begins as a plaintive, soft-spoken piano ballad before bursting into 60s-imbued tones that recall the best of Lennon and McCartney, and has shades of modern-day contemporaries like The Lemon Twigs and Tobias Jesso Jr. It deftly rides the line between minimalism and maximalism, with echoey harmonies and dueling, delicate guitar leads that interplay with Major’s frank lyricism. He shared the following about the track below:
“‘We Were Never Really Friends’ paints a picture of the blurry line between friends and lovers,” Bruno explains. “Ostensibly lamenting the loss of a good friend, until the ultimate realization arrives that it was always something more.”
