Texas duo Briscoe announced that their new album, Heat of July, will be released on Sept. 19, via ATO Records.
This new era marks a major sonic leap for lifelong friends Philip Lupton and Truett Heintzelman, filled with their signature intertwined vocals, experiences as husbands and family men, and a love for the outdoors. Heat of July was produced by Grammy-nominated Brad Cook, who’s worked with the likes of Waxahatchee and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, and featuring a “folk supergroup” including Watchhouse (formerly Mandolin Orange) and studio musicians who have performed with artists such as Bon Iver, Houndmouth and Hiss Golden Messenger. The album’s sweeping arrangements and vibrant storytelling elevate the duo’s raw foundation into something much more polished and mastered.
Along with the announcement of Heat of July, Briscoe released the lead single from the record, “Roughnecks.” The sentimental track was inspired by a photo of Heintzelman’s great-grandfather, who made a living in the oilfields of Texas. Heat of July not only focuses on Briscoe’s musical shift, but also on a more personal one. Since the success of their last record, the duo has gone on to marry their lifetime partners and become more family-oriented. It’s inspired by their family lives, Texas roots, and extensive touring experiences. With most of the record written on the road, Heat of July serves to explore the significance of the duo’s home territory, but also offers a broader view of the American landscape. Lupton shares the inspiration behind the record’s title, stating,
“We both grew up in parts of the country that were hot all the time. My parents live on 100 acres in West Texas, and there’s not a single proper tree. When you have that kind of heat running through your blood, you learn how to wait for the cool of the day. We really loved using that idea for the album title. That feeling that you get in July… it transcends the month itself. You take it with you all year long, and you learn how to appreciate the cool when it does come.”
Heat of July shares the journey of personal and artistic growth faced by Briscoe throughout their entire lives and career trajectory. It serves as a love letter to their home, wives, families, friendship, and more. Briscoe showcases what they’ve learned both about themselves and their dynamic through this powerful tribute to the people and places that have had an immense impact on them.
