It’s never too early to start thinking about ‘Sad Girl Autumn,’ a time for girls to trade in the upbeat pop stylings of ‘Hot Girl Summer’ for more emotional, stripped-back ballads. Proficient in the ways of ‘Sad Girl Autumn’ is Avery Lynch, who crafts soul-baring songs that flaunt her expressive songwriting skills. Recent singles like “Dead to Me” and “Lasting Effects” both go hand-in-hand with the vibes of ‘Sad Girl Autumn,’ as they explored past relationships. In fact, the singles that Avery has released up to this point have centered on the aftermath of a breakup, touching on themes of longing, confusion, and disappointment. Her latest single, however, breaks this pattern, making it a nice surprise.
On “Sweetheart,” Avery is not sad. She is not lonely. She is not haunted. Instead, she is completely in love. Over the warm acoustic guitar strums, Avery openly describes how this partner pays attention to her, shows care and affection, and is there for her in ways that she could have never imagined. Lovingly, she sings, “He wants to see me / He calls me pretty when we’re alone and when we’re not” and “He calls me sweetheart / And likes to talk to me,” taking these seemingly typical aspects of a relationship to heart. She believes that it is all “too good to be true,” alluding to the types of relationships she has dealt with in the past.
About “Sweetheart,” Avery explains,
“‘Sweetheart’ reflects on the early days of my relationship and how quickly I realized that what I’d accepted in the past wasn’t love. I remember being surprised, and embarrassingly impressed, by him asking me follow-up questions, walking me home, and genuinely wanting me around. It was eye-opening to be with someone who cared about me and wasn’t afraid to show it.
“I wrote this one with my boyfriend, Jordan, and our close friend Neisha Grace. Producing the track with Jordan afterwards felt like a really full-circle moment.”
