Her songs are like a much needed therapy session, uncovering the reason behind certain feelings rather than stating the feelings alone. In the end, she has a much better understanding of the world around her, which listeners can also feel or appreciate themselves. They are able to heal and grow with her, from certain people and scenarios. To get to this point, Ana Luna had to go through a period of reflection and self-improvement, which led to her pursuit of music full-time after college. Since then, her sound has evolved into a fascinating blend of genres and styles, like dreamy pop gems and moody ballads, best reflecting the array of emotions she describes.
Her new single, “Dance in a Trance,” is a hypnotic exploration of life after a breakup. The track plays out like a dramatic march, with persistent drum rolls and steady beats. All the while, Ana’s powerful and deep vocals capture the turmoil she is in, as she ruminates about the former relationship. It is as if she is setting up a trance as she sings, “My skin, it burns / My heart, it calls for a witness to the stand.” She is left wondering what to think of the time spent with this person—was it all a game? Was she happier? You can check it out below.
Telling us more about “Dance in a Trance,” Ana explains,
“People will interpret my songs however they want, but this one wasn’t about making anyone the bad guy—it was very much about me. I’d run into my ex and he wouldn’t even look at me. When we did lock eyes, the energy just felt…different. The line, ‘a caged romance,’ came from something he once said to a friend of ours about feeling ‘caged’ or trapped, which ironically, is how I felt too. It wasn’t toxic in the way we tend to define toxic now—but maybe it was in its own way, just because of how intense it all was. This song lives in that duality of: either you’ve always been this person and I was blind, or remind me why I loved you so I don’t feel like an idiot.”
