When it comes to dating and relationships, Ally Salort has not held back. In recent months, she has released songs like “Messy,” “Before and After,” and “Horror Movie,” which reveal aspects of relationships that everyone deals with but might not always share in front of others. In “Messy,” for instance, Ally likes the fact that her relationship is not perfect, whereas on “Before and After,” she notices that she might not be a relationship type of girl. On “Horror Movie,” Ally compares what it is like to crawl back to an ex to the plot of a horror movie. With her latest single, “Tattoo (selective memory),” Ally continues to tell all.
On “Tattoo (selective memory),” Ally opens up about life after a breakup. As much as she tries to stay strong, there are those times when being alone becomes too much. She sings, “When I miss you is when it’s hard, and it’s hard tonight / Oh, I forget what you did to me / Selective memory.” In these moments, she forgets “all the bad nights” and convinces herself “that you’re right the guy.” It seems as if the only way to get over her ex is to get “a tattoo just to remind me why I left.” But amongst all of the heartache is lively guitar, playful beats, and lively pop melodies that give the song life and texture, making it more of a celebratory breakup anthem than a pitiful breakup party.
Giving us more details about the single, Ally explains,
“‘Tattoo (selective memory)’ is about getting nostalgic for a person/relationship that wasn’t actually healthy. Romanticizing the good parts and forgetting all the reasons it didn’t work out. I had the title ‘selective memory’ and we just wrote around that!”
“Tattoo (selective memory)” will be on Ally’s upcoming debut EP, Change of Plans, due for release July 18. You can pre-save it here.
