This year has been a productive and successful one for Ally Salort. A couple months in, she started releasing singles that flaunted her heartfelt and relatable songwriting, while further validated her reputation as an artist who offers unique perspectives on everyday emotions. These singles, such as “Horror Movie” and “Tattoo (selective memory),” touched on heartbreak and growth, which were just two themes that would be further explored on her debut EP.
Released in July, Ally’s debut EP, Change of Plans, was a coming-of-age project that emphasized some of the messy, yet beautiful, aspects of young adulthood. From finding what she wants in a relationship to embracing who she really is, Ally dives into it all on her EP, making it an authentic snapshot of her life and artistry. Overall, the project is about embracing the changes, leaning into the unexpected, and appreciating the various transformations you may encounter as you go through life, hence the EP title. Staying true to this title, Ally is about to go through another change as she embarks on a new chapter of her career.
On her new single “We’re Not Friends,” Ally confronts someone who does not deserve to be in her life anymore. The track starts out very mellow with minimal accompaniment, allowing the opening lines of “The only thing worse than a bad guy / Is a bad guy who thinks he’s a saint” to sink in. Ally then gives us the grit, sass, and honest reflection that can be found in an Olivia Rodrigo song, as she tells this person the reality of the situation. She sings, “I want you to feel how I feel / I want you to pay for my tears / I want you to mean what you said / But now I know you never did.” Ultimately, she concludes, “Oh, you’ll never know me again / We’re not friends,” cementing the end of this relationship.
