The Beths have built a reputation for turning emotionally honest indie rock into something joyously explosive, and their show in Boston was a perfect example of why they’ve become one of the most beloved live bands of the moment. They not only sold out one night in Boston but the second night as well. From the opening chords, the New Zealand quartet radiated a kind of effortless warmth and equal parts tight musicianship that made the entire venue feel like a room full of friends.
Before The Beths took to the stage the crowd was graced with a magnificent performance from New Zealand’s own Phoebe Rings. The band released their debut album Aseurai earlier this year and finds them continuing to explore their disco and city-pop influences while staying true to the dream-pop sound of their previous self-titled EP. The crowd was loving every minute of their set from their dreamy melodies and witty banter. They were such a good choice as an opener and we hope to see more from them in the future!
The Beths then took the stage and Liz Stokes’ vocals were the standout of the night, bright, agile, and tinged with just enough vulnerability to give each lyric weight. Whether she was delivering rapid fire melodies or softer, reflective lines, her voice never wavered. But the magic of The Beths has always been their vocal blend and the comradery of the band. The band released their new album Straight Line Was A Lie earlier this year to great success. Fans packed the venue eager to hear the new songs live.
The band’s setlist was a well-balanced mix of favorites and deeper cuts with most of the songs coming from the new album. “Future Me Hates Me” and “Expert in a Dying Field” drew some of the loudest cheers. They even sang their cover of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” in the spirit of the holidays. Between songs, the band’s trademark self-deprecating humor and gentle banter added to the charm.
By the encore, the room was buzzing. Not a single sole in that venue wasn’t dancing and singing along. The Beths don’t rely on theatrics or big production tricks; they rely on heart, craft, and chemistry. And on that front, they delivered completely. Be sure to catch The Beths at a show near you!
