The Flaming Lips brought their theatrical live show to Iron City in Birmingham, AL in support of their 2017 album Oczy Mlody. “Theatrical” really does not do this band justice — the elder statesmen of psych-rock exist on the border of insanity within their live show, with pounds of confetti and laser lights filling the air at any given moment. A Lips show is one of pure joy and exuberance and a willingness to just go with whatever is happening. It can be a giant inflatable robot sing-a-long to “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” or watching Wayne Coyne ride around the venue on a mechanical unicorn high-fiving every audience member. Either way, everyone should have the opportunity to see the Flaming Lips, as they created a world that is intoxicatingly surreal and fun within the span of an hour and a half.
