Aussie sensation Julia Jacklin dropped into Atlanta’s Terminal West last night to perform a stunning set of songs from her 2019 release Crushing. After a show at Shaky Knees Music Festival that found itself on many “Best-Of” recap lists, Tuesday marked her long-awaited return to Atlanta.

Julia came on stage to an impeccably-made show playlist and launched into “Eastwick”. It felt as if the room was built just for her; I’m not sure there’s been a better-sounding show at Terminal West. Her voice, alternating between a soft, delicate whisper to a roar on songs like “Body” and a remarkable cover of The Birthday Party’s “Shivers”. The band behind her was in perfect harmony, manuevering their way through delicate arrangements and rhythms that had the crowd enthusiastically singing along. The most beautiful moments of the night though, were the few moments where Julia took the spotlight for herself — the crowd fell into a hushed stupor when it was just her and a guitar, which she noted was a sharp contrast from the early years of her career when she was playing for “people who didn’t want her there.” One can only hope that Julia returns to Atlanta soon, as this show proved that she is a force to be reckoned with among singer-songwriters.
