Last night was a big night for indie rock at the The Roxy. Headliner Ben Kweller was joined by his friend and collaborator, Modern Love Child, as well as local alternative rock group, MainMan. Kweller has been releasing music and touring for about two decades now, captivating audiences with his lighthearted, throwback sounding indie and folk rock. His presence on stage is electric and his sound is equally as buoyant, making it hard not to have a good time as you watch from the crowd. With the way Kweller’s performance was warmly received by the audience, you get the idea that most people in attendance were long-time fans, singing and jamming out along with Kweller.

Although I was only able to catch the tail end of opener Modern Love Child’s performance, it’s easy to see why Ben Kweller lists him as one of his current favorite artists and someone he often writes with. With only his guitar and a backing drummer, Modern Love Child (a pseudonym for LA local Johnny Shane) charmed the crowd with his uniquely bright indie surf-rock sound as he played some tunes from his forthcoming album. MainMan, a four-piece alternative rock group from Southern California, followed him with a bunch of transcendent guitar solos and classic but somehow fresh-sounding alternative songs that left the crowd buzzing.
