Ellise takes the pleasure with the pain on “Did It Hurt?”

Date:

Did it hurt when you fell from heaven? On her new single, “Did It Hurt?Ellise has a taste for the bittersweet, asking, “What’s love without some hate? What’s pleasure minus pain?” The singer-songwriter has a passion for examining the ugly side of love, the roughest edges of a relationship. Throughout the track, she balances glimmering acoustic guitars with grunge-inspired bass lines and beat drops. She recounts a previous relationship that put the toxic in intoxicating, and admits to “Painting all the red flags white.” However, she doesn’t regret it, and sings, “If I had the chance, I’d do it all again.”

About “Did It Hurt?” and her songwriting process, Ellise says, “(It’s) a rare type of song for me. When you have a lot to say, it simultaneously makes the writing process messy and seamless. No amount of studio time or consistency can force raw emotion because when it’s there, it’s just there.” She adds, “I’m really proud of this song. The erratic (instrumental) switches are a sonic metaphor for the full spectrum of emotions a person can go through in such a short amount of time while dealing with losing someone they love.”
