Alma Owren captures the weight of being “under the surface” in new track

Date:

Alma Owren—a 19-year-old Norwegian multi-talented musician, songwriter and actress—released the standout title track, “under the surface” featured on her debut EP. By observing the weight of her own suppressed emotions and deep thoughts, Owren channels what it feels like to be pulled beneath the surface—trapped, yet seeking release through introspection and self-discovery.

As a new musician whose discography began just this year with her debut single, “outcast,” Owren has drawn from her musical background as a violinist, guitarist and producer to create a sound that flows with her creative vision. Her style combines a delicate singer-songwriter persona with the bold indie pop genre, which can be compared to the style of artists like Lizzy McAlpine, Aurora and Tom Odell.

“under the surface” features soft, wispy vocals that gently carry the listeners through the track, accompanied by an echoey, almost eerie production touch that gradually intensifies. In addition, vulnerable and introspective lines such as “Am I safe with me / I’ve tried to hold it in / The sharpening breathing / Under my chest / I feel it bleeding” add depth to the song’s intricate exploration of emotional complexity.

In an Instagram post regarding the EP’s release, Owren described making ”under the surface” as one of the most fulfilling creative experiences of her life. Through rawness, openness and the commitment to honesty, she demonstrates her admirable strength of bringing unspoken emotions into the spotlight.
