The missing piece we need: Jonas Brothers ‘Live From The O2 London’ — Album Review

Date:

Last September, New Jersey’s favorite boy band flew across the pond to the United Kingdom. Selling out London’s iconic O2 Arena, the Jonas Brothers documented their achievement with the culmination of their past, present, and future all on one live album. Released June 13th, Live From The O2 London is the Jonas Brothers’ seventh album, and includes a collection of fan favorites dating back to their earliest works and even a few new releases. You could say this album was “the missing piece we need” to hold us over until their next project, releasing in just under two months. Teasing a song from Greetings From Your Hometown and even throwing in a surprise cover (or two), fans were fully in tune for a night of nostalgia.

The Jonas Brothers open the album with an electrifying instrumental introduction including a countdown to the first vocals we hear (Nick). Aptly, “Celebrate” follows suit, and a throaty and energetic Joe Jonas takes over the second chorus, an energy he maintains for the entire album’s runtime. A track from their 2023 record The Album plays next, the studio version having been produced by Jon Bellion. Throughout the album’s duration, it is very impressive how they are able to take Bellion’s intricate production and translate it into an even rockier live performance.

“What A Man Gotta Do” allows Nick’s vocals to shine as he riffs, with Joe asking the crowd to join in in the final minutes of the song as trumpets blast. Songs four through seven are the first blasts from the past for OG JB fans to get their nostalgia fix. A twinkly beginning takes the crowd into a killer’s row of throwbacks, including fan-favorite cruise ship anthem “S.O.S.” When it comes to “Year 3000,” the Jonas Brothers are joined by English pop-punk band Busted, who wrote and recorded the original track back in 2003.

The set continues, reaching its first acoustic break. Paired perfectly, “Summer Baby” and “Vacation Eyes” are back to back. Joe says “this song is about falling in love on the beach, just like I did” about the latter, as Nick and his falsetto take over. For those who grew up on Disney Channel’s Camp Rock, the setlist wouldn’t be complete without Shane Grey’s famous “Gotta Find You,” barely 2 minutes long. “I can think of one more from those movies if you want another one,” Joe taunts the crowd. One enthusiastic “One, two, three, four” later, and Joe starts the first verse and asks the crowd to finish off.

During “Burnin’ Up,” the crowd sings the entire bridge, taking Big Rob’s place – which are giant shoes to fill, but the audience makes do. They perform “When You Know,” an unreleased ballad from the brothers’ upcoming album Greetings From Your Hometown, slated to release on August 8th. This is the only song in the entire set that fans don’t know the words to; however, I’m sure once the album is released it won’t take them long to learn. 2009 Radio Disney debut’s “Paranoid” follows up a rock-ified “Fly With Me.”

“I don’t know about y’all but I heard this is a party” is followed by Nick’s solo single “Jealous,” then with “Cake By The Ocean,” Joe’s former band DNCE’s lead single. With an eclectic guitar outro flourish, the set heads to the home stretch. “Only Human” features a strategic pause after the first liner “I don’t want this night to end,” to which the crowd goes wild. “Leave Before You Love Me,” a separate single made with Marshmello, comes in as the band’s second most streamed song (right behind “Sucker”) just shy of 1 billion streams on Spotify.

Capping off their 24-song set, an apt cover of The Cranberries’ “Dreams” is the album’s unlikely closer. As the Jonas Brothers approach the release date for their upcoming album as well as celebrate their 25th year as a band, this is a dream they won’t be sure to wake up from anytime soon.
