Global K-pop icons MONSTA X have just released the highly anticipated The X, their first mini album in four years. The release also marks the group’s 10-year debut anniversary following their return to Los Angeles’ KCON earlier this summer.

The X is jam packed with powerful drum beats and sensual bass lines, with a fine balance of soaring vocals and rapping. From start to finish, the sound grabs hold of the listener and does not let go: it is a nonstop celebration with an eclectic blend of styles. Right off the bat, the pre-released single “Do What I Want” opens with a hypnotic chant that draws you in, followed by a thunderous dance beat that signals the clear return of the group. The track is unapologetic and full of confidence, an anthem to their staying power as MONSTA X looks at the future ahead.

“N The Front” is the album’s focus track, an ode to unwavering strength and crushing determination. A funky groove intertwines with the rumbling rock section, bringing the lyrics’ defiant tone to life. Its intensity delivers the group’s statement loud and clear: one of resilience and refusal to back down. “N The Front” stays dynamic and exciting throughout, which sets the tone for MONSTA X’s long awaited return.

“Savior” shifts the tone of the experience a bit, slowing down into a sultry electronic sound that is still powerful. This is in line with the mini album’s entire vibe: eclectic, unpredictable and highly energetic on different levels. We are then greeted with one of The X‘s highlights, “Tuscan Leather.” standing out as one of the album’s most complex tracks. Lyrically enticing, its shape-shifting sound is what makes it so interesting, with an old school hip-hop vibe that seamlessly turns into melodic pop. It’s an exciting display of the group’s ability to push their own creative boundaries.

The funky, yearning vibes continue with “Catch Me Now” as we slowly reach the end of the album’s sonic journey. “Fire & Ice” softly closes The X, with an almost euphoric beat that sees our love story finally materialized; opposing elements come together in a passionate dance that shows love has no boundaries. It serves as the perfect conclusion to an intoxicating, yet incredibly cohesive soundscape, an authentic representation of MONSTA X’s next chapter.
