London’s biggest and most popular Y2K-core alternative rock band South Arcade have released their long anticipated EP, PLAY! The EP consists of pre-released tracks “Drive Myself Home,” “Supermodels,” and “FEAR OF HEIGHTS,” along with two unreleased songs, “Bleed Out” and “Blood Run Warm.”
Consisting of members Harmony (vocals), Ollie (bass), Cody (drums), and Harry (guitar), the band’s popularity skyrocketed to astonishing heights as their hit song “stone cold summer” gained attention on TikTok and earned well over 15 million streams on Spotify. Additionally, the band has just finished up the last portion of their first ever nearly sold-out North American tour, and a sold-out Europe/UK tour as well, a well-deserved accomplishment.
Opening the EP with the catchy riffs of “Drive Myself Home,” the band had this to say about the creation of the track in a press release:
“‘Drive Myself Home’ is about realizing that time spent on something or the history attached to it isn’t the reason to hold on. What was right once may not be right now, and letting go doesn’t make you a bad person; it just means you’re doing what’s best for you.’ “
Following this song comes the first unreleased track, “Bleed Out,” a track holding similar 2000s rock vibes that the band is most known for. It’s an angsty song of vengeance as seen in the lyrics, “I wanna watch you bleed out / and leave you in the snow / I wanna cause a scene now / ’cause everyone should know / I need that satisfaction, the light leaving your eyes / I’m out here screaming action / while you fight for your life.”
Transitioning away from the heavy breakdowns of “Bleed Out,” we move into fan-favorite singles “Supermodels,” released in early March, and “FEAR OF HEIGHTS,” released in July.
The EP ends with a more modern feel with “Blood Run Warm.” The track is a slow, tender waltz that confronts the feeling of falling in love with someone, yet feeling as if one is stuck in a dreamscape: “You make my blood run warm / like nothing I’ve felt before / you make my blood run warm / You make my blood run warm / someone worth trying for.” This track surprised many fans with its intricate and heartwarming grasp on listeners’ hearts.
After hearing this EP, we’re looking forward even more to what’s still to come from South Arcade.
