MONSTA X details the complex nature of healing with historic third full-length English album ‘Unfold’ — Album Review

Date:

After completing mandatory military service and celebrating their 10th anniversary, MONSTA X has returned with their third full-length English-language album, Unfold

The K-pop icons have dominated the music scene since their explosive debut under Starship Entertainment in 2015. The six-member boy group continues to contribute to the genre’s growing global expansion, establishing them as the first act to ever release three full-length English albums. Their previous releases, ALL ABOUT LUV and The Dreaming, initially showcased their impressive ability to connect with audiences worldwide without forfeiting their unique musical identity.

Unfold is a vulnerable project that takes the listener through a powerful journey of healing and growth. Each of the 10 tracks represents a different stage in that emotional arc, starting with realization and ending with self-preservation and acceptance.

The focus track “heal” opens the album and introduces the first step in the healing process through soaring orchestral strings and moving lyricism. The mid-tempo anthem details the struggle of loving someone so deeply it hurts and being unable to let go even though you continue to hurt each other. “heal” delivers a resoundingly cinematic performance that sets the tone for Unfold’s emotional complexity and raw honesty. “growing pains” and “baby blue” close out the initial chapter of self-reflection with deeply personal takes on the group’s evolution in the spotlight and unshakable nostalgic aches.

The album then progresses through different stages of healing and growth with every track, blending influences from a range of genres including pop-rock, R&B, electro-pop and more. “this!”, “main attraction,” and “enemies with benefits” are some of the album’s strongest tracks, shifting the perspective to distraction as the group attempts to numb painful thoughts and guilt through adrenaline, intimacy, and ego.

The group finally reaches clarity in Unfold’s final act, confronting their inner flaws and reclaiming their self-worth on its compelling finale, “sorry to myself.” MONSTA X continues to expand their massive international impact with this release delivering their most mature and resonating body of work to date.
