Dayseeker’s latest record isn’t just an exploration of a heavier, more intense soundscape — it’s a loaded gun. Emerging from the post-hardcore scene into something much more diverse and difficult to categorize, the Southern California four-piece has unleashed their immersive sixth album Creature In The Black Night via Spinefarm Records.

Vocalist Rory Rodriguez, guitarist Gino Sgambelluri, bassist Ramone Valerio and drummer Zac Mayfield are at their most creatively daunting as they bring the album’s raw and eerie nature to life. Born from the shadows, the record tackles heavy topics of toxicity, grief and insecurity through an intentional, horror-soaked lens.

Pale Moonlight” pulls the listener into the harrowing world of Creature In The Black Night, serving as the album’s lead single and opening track. The song stands as a surrender to the vices, addictions and fears that plague the mind. Between his signature rich vocals and better-than-ever guttural screams, “Pale Moonlight” is already a stellar representation of Rodriguez at his best vocally.

The entrancing title track follows, further pulling your attention into the darkest corners of Dayseeker’s artistry. Its heavy breakdowns and dramatic shifts make “Creature In The Black Night” an intensely captivating listen that speaks to the adrenaline rush of letting the most sinister parts of your conscience take over.

“Crawl Back To Your Coffin” was the final taste of Creature In The Black Night ahead of its release and arguably the most exciting. Rodriguez delivers pure, candid emotion in a way that can only be described as bone-chilling. The production of the track is reminiscent of their last effort Dark Sun, but with a more refined and focused purpose. Rodriguez shares,

“‘Crawl Back To My Coffin’ is a metaphor for love that hurts you when you’re guarded and causes your walls to go up even further. The excitement in meeting someone new when you’re ‘dead’ and feeling like they bring you back to life only to feel pain and wish you had never left your grave at the end of it.”

Dayseeker inflicts the most painstakingly precise representation of anxiety with “Shapeshift.” Rodriguez wrote the track about how the paralyzing feeling often morphs you into something unrecognizable. His screams convey this debilitating sensation as he echoes, “Something wicked in the way it moves / Terrorizing every part of you” before escaping into a concentrated breakdown.

Creature In The Black Night changes pace with “Soulburn,” a mellow, electronic-driven track that bares a quiet anger with nothing more than fluttering synths and Rodriguez’s soaring vocals. This switchup doesn’t last long, however, as “Bloodlust” kicks in with a scathing power that cements it as one of the record’s most commanding tracks. Its razor-sharp instrumental soars with intense guitar riffs and harsh percussion elements as Rodriguez erupts, shifting from smooth, clean vocals to much more haunting screams.

“Cemetery Blues” first grabs attention as a fragile, softer effort laced with more synths before exploding into something much bigger. “Nocturnal Remedy” is a dark, pounding anthem about the torment of experiencing lust with the void of a deeper connection. The track is a definitive standout on the record that hypnotizes the listener with its eerily spooky energy.

At first listen, “The Living Dead” is an emotional ballad that navigates through dying and coming to terms with loss. The track’s significance, however, runs much deeper as you dive further below its surface. Rodriguez shares,

“It’s really about emotional numbness. Through therapy, I realized I’ve spent most of my life compartmentalizing — just surviving. That zombie imagery became a way of expressing that disconnect. The kind where you know you should be feeling something, but you don’t.”

“Meet The Reaper” is arguably Dayseeker at their best. It’s an enticing and addictive track that towers as the most thrilling piece of the record’s puzzle. The song is drenched in longing as Rodriguez dramatically sings of an unconditional love so strong, you’d face the Grim Reaper just to spend eternity with someone. “Meet The Reaper” is everything you’d anticipate from a Dayseeker track multiplied by 100. The band comes full-circle with this song, delivering one of the most deliberate and undeniable spectacles of their evolution as musicians yet.

Creature In The Black Night comes to a cathartic conclusion with “Forgotten Ghost.” It’s the kind of track that leaves you stunned in silence, unable to do anything but hit replay to try to fully process what you’ve just heard. With recurring motifs of death and the afterlife, the band sheds the lingering emotional weight they’ve held onto throughout the album. Dayseeker shows that acceptance and growth will set you free, no matter how far gone you may think you are. It’s a reminder that the dark past may always lurk in the shadows, but it’s the past for a reason. “Forgotten Ghost” serves as a compelling and surreal finale that perfectly lays Creature In The Black Night to rest.

If there’s one thing that this album proves, it’s that Dayseeker are the most authentic and intentional with their art that they’ve ever been. The intricate storytelling, ominous imagery and blistering instrumentals across the 11 tracks cement this album as an intoxicatingly immersive experience unlike any other. Dayseeker ventures into the darkest corners of the mind to meticulously craft a resonant and deeply personal sonic escape. Until its very last breath, Creature In The Black Night is a striking effort that takes hold not only on your ears, but also on your mind and soul.

Dayseeker is currently rounding out a run of shows across the United States in support of In This Moment. The band is also set to head to Australia in early December for Good Things Festival before closing out the year with their sold-out annual holiday show in Anaheim, CA.
