In Knox’s new sentimental pop-ballad, “50/50” he lets his listeners know it’s okay to ask for more. The single is the third release, following “Pick Your Poison” and “You Happened,” off Knox’s upcoming debut album, Going Going Gone which comes out in just under three weeks. A diversion from his last two releases, “50/50” tackles tougher subject matter, in asking for what you need in a relationship.
The first verse paints the picture of the beginning stages of a relationship, the honeymoon phase as it’s so often referred to. Complete with Knox’s signature word play is the couplett “Five minutes and you missed me / Tripping over how hard we fell”. In the first verse there is a shift, transitioning to a pre chorus with a catchy climbing scale. A mix of rhetorical questions and pent up frustration, the chorus asks essentially for more effort from the relationship’s counterpart. The remainder of the song is hopeful and follows this theme of returning the effort that’s being put forth by only half of the relationship. The music video is simple and showcases blues, symbolic of the feeling of the song as well as a reference to the album art.
“50/50” feels like a diversion from his last single “You Happened” in more ways than one. While that single was a little more upbeat in tone, it felt like a song expressing good riddance. “50/50” is more akin to making things work, seeing that the relationship could go either way. We know that at least one half is fully invested yet are unsure of the feelings of the other.
