Free Flight Records artist, Darren Kiely has released two new tracks, “Old & Grey” and “Mulcair Road.” Originally from Cork, Ireland, Kiely blends folk and pop influences, drawing inspiration from traditional Irish music and artists like The Lumineers and Noah Kahan. He gained recognition for his raw vocals and storytelling and moved to NYC in 2022 before signing with Free Flight Records in Nashville.
His debut EP, Lost, featured the hit “Mom & Dad” and chart-topping “Sunrise.” His follow-up EP, From The Dark, explores themes of growth and change. Kiely has toured extensively, selling out shows and supporting acts like The 502s and Mat Kearney.
“Mulcair Road,” co-written with Ross Ellis, Joe Fox, and Geoff Warburton, paints a story of Kiely revisiting a childhood place that has changed over time and what you once knew is no longer. “‘Mulcair road’ is about returning to a place that isn’t how you left it,” Kiely explained. “It describes the expectation of familiarity and safety but the realization that time has passed and what you left, isn’t there anymore.”
“Old & Grey,” co-written by Joe Fox and Geoff Warburton, reflects on the loss of a loved one and the lingering emotions you feel with it. Kiely shared the meaning behind the song, stating, “‘Old & Grey’ laments the longing for a loved one. It expresses how we can lose our identity without those we love the most. It also describes the memories and emotions that will remain forever.”
