Julia Calvin gets vulnerable in newest single “Honey I’m Home”

Date:

Costa Rican/American singer-songwriter Julia Calvin has released her latest single, “Honey I’m Home,” making it her 5th single this year and the last single off her EP. This song is truly a raw expression of her talent within her lyrical work. The song’s strength lies within its lyrical compositions and how it blends into a beautifully vulnerable story of a struggle within the ups and downs of mental health.

The song opens with a haunting piano melody that would seem at first listen like it would lean to be a ballad, but as the song progresses, so does its cross into the alt pop genre. This combination within its composition and the use of different tempos also help to highlight her vocal tone. Thematically, it worked to blend the jump through genres with this setup. The ad libs add a layer of depth into the song, as well. Calvin is able to use her voice as the cherry on top, but not to dominate and take away from what’s already there.

She carries a reflective tone in her voice as she sings out, “Honey I’m home / Light me on fire / Love how you hurt / Cause it means I’m alive.” Her lyrics seem introspective to the struggle of being a human being with emotions that fluctuate. There’s a tenderness to the lyrics that creates an atmosphere that feels safe and validating. Many listeners will be able to relate to going back to something even while knowing it’s not the best option.

Calvin continues to prove the force she’s becoming — apart from earning titles like the BMI Foundation’s Peermusic Latin Scholarship Award, she’s coming into her own within her artistry and music.
