As we have learned from Caroline Romano, growing up is not for the faint of heart. It can be painfully disappointing, as heard on singles like “Used by You,” or it can be beautifully confusing, as we’ve heard on “Doesn’t Matter.” Whatever the case, Caroline has told us all about her experience with getting older and the lessons she has learned about herself in the process. She has definitely had her fair share of highs and lows, and on her new single, the alt-pop artist shares where she stands so far.
A dynamic anthem produced and co-written by Danen Reed Rector (Charlotte Sands, Boys Like Girls), “Body Bag” captures the frenzy of young adulthood. Lyrically, Caroline gives us happy but broken images as she reflects on memories from her past. Here, the music is mellow but building, the tones of the piano and driving strums of the guitar leading us towards the choruses. When we get there, these instrumentals morph into glitchy and fast-paced beats, establishing an intimate club-like atmosphere. As we take in this shift, Caroline sings, “Now I’m too wasted / My body’s shaking / The walls are changing / I think I’ve got a nosebleed and she’s holding my hair back,” instilling the sense that life can get very real very fast. About “Body Bag,” Caroline explains,
“I always had this picture in my mind of who I would be at this age and what my life would look like, and I always thought it would be shiny, fun, sexy, and exhilarating. I’ve spent the last few years chasing those feelings, but ‘Body Bag’ is a peek behind the curtain at the reality of modern romance and feeling young and old at the same time. I think, sonically, the song has so many ups and downs, and that’s exactly how this stage of my life has felt. It’s running barefoot on the concrete, chasing something you can’t quite put your finger on but running towards it nonetheless. That’s how I would best describe ‘Body Bag.’”
You can listen to “Body Bag” on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
