Fresh off the release of her video for “Coming and Going” – check out our review of the video here – Amaal Nuux made an appearance to Livenation‘s Lounge for a very intimate performance. This was to celebrate “Ones to Watch: Northside Sessions” in collaboration with Canadian Music Week.
The atmosphere during this performance was nothing short of surreal. Whether members of the audience were known fans of Amaal Nuux, or attended the Northside Session to discover new talent, it was clear that they left fans of the Somali-Canadian singer. Her dreamy vocals left the crowd in a trance like movement with individuals singing and harmonizing to her words and clearly expressing their excitement through cheers in between songs.
A key thing to note about Amaal is that her music is greatly relatable to personal issues, creating a cohesive and strong bond with the audience. In contemporary times, it is often common to listen to music centered around topics such as immense wealth and braggadocious lifestyles, which audiences cannot fully relate to. While there is nothing wrong with songs centered around said topics, it is certainly refreshing to see an artist that strays away from the contemporary formula/norm. Specifically, Amaal’s lyrics are socially conscious; centered around topics such as relationships and growth. In regards to this performance, this connection was only amplified with the intimate venue size which put Amaal very close to the audience.
On top of this, Amaal’s music is sonically very good. The highlight of her performance was her live rendition of “Mufasa“. It displayed not only her storytelling capabilities, but also how to create an emotional ballad consisting of a wide vocal range of melodies, all topped off by a strong chorus. Hearing it live was absolutely stunning as it raised the question to whether her live music or recorded music was better, each bringing about their own unique strengths.
Ultimately, the only complaint at the end of the night was that Amaal’s set was not longer. Old fans and new fans were stunned by her talent and greatly wished the set time could be extended, chanting “One more song!” as the lights dimmed to darkness. Amaal’s recent growth as an artist has made it inevitable that the next time she performs will definitely be in a larger venue, making this intimate experience one to cherish.
