Minneapolis native Your Smith has released “Christina” as the new single off her newly released album, The Rub. The indie-pop track finds Smith’s multi-genre musicianship at its best with some of her catchiest hooks ever.
“Christina” has a stripped-down opening with vocals and keys only, waiting until the chorus to introduce a mix of soul and indie rock, featuring a funky bassline and bright guitars. She sings about showing up for, well, someone named Christina, and helping her get revenge on an ex who did her wrong. In the verses, she playfully hints at how they would deal with the man, singing, “It ain’t against the law to buy a boat, ya know / It happens every day, Christina / You could throw a lot out in the ocean / With no one ever knowin’ I’m just sayin’.”
Smith has previously released studio albums, Half About Being a Woman in 2013 as Caroline Smith, and Little Wind in 2011 with her band, Caroline Smith & The Good Night Sleeps. The new single, however, is part of her highly anticipated first LP under the name Your Smith. The Rub arrives after a four-year musical break during which the singer-songwriter focused on starting a family and going back to college. She opened up about why it was essential to take her time before returning to music:
“A big part of making this record was figuring out how music could coexist with this new life I’d created. It wasn’t a very neat or fluid process, but it required me to think about how to fit music into my life in a way that’s entirely on my own terms”
“Christina” is preceded by six singles off The Rub, including “Mr. Revival,” “Change of Heart,” “Peaches,” “Hey There’s My Girl,” “Little Highways,” and “Leaving You.” To celebrate the success of her musical comeback, Smith is hitting the road this fall with The Rub Tour in North America.
