American boy band Why Don’t We alum Jonah Marais’ new single “Twisted Lullaby” tackles career insecurity atop a catchy pop-rock hook that doesn’t quite get off the ground, but manages to deliver a sufficient enough single.
Marais opens the track by addressing criticisms he’s faced while making a name for himself in Why Don’t We, repeating critiques such as: “You can’t play instruments like Dan / Can’t sing like Jack, you wish you can / Can’t dress like Corbyn, can’t even dance / And we both know Zach was the face of the band”. This pattern continues in the pre-chorus as he admits “I should probably move home and go to school instead”. Electric guitar strums background his retelling of critiques as drums and bass build out the chorus.
The song follows a typical pop rock structure, offering a straightforward, familiar sound reminiscent of an early aughts pop band. Marais might be trying to escape the “dark and twisted lullaby” that follows him, he should perhaps aim to escape the restraints of rudimentary pop rock.
