After years in the Disney spotlight and a stint in R5 (a band consisting almost entirely of the Lynch siblings à la The Jackson 5), Ross Lynch is a face many cannot help but immediately picture when that distinctive and polished showbiz voice rings out. For those who grew up alongside his roles on several of Disney’s shows and movies, he has become a sort of nostalgic fixture of an undeniable heartthrob (and of Disney’s last gasp of their golden years). But THE DRIVER ERA, Ross’ musical endeavor of over six years alongside brother Rocky Lynch, continues to deliver output far from nostalgia trips.

The duo’s latest single “Don’t Walk Away” is a punchy and funky tale of captivation that’s fit for a cool fall drive with the windows down. The duo doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but manages to still distill their longing down to a danceable cut that at least offers groove, putter and a bit of pomp.

The single follows this year’s also punchy and uptempo “Get off My Phone” and “You Keep Me up at Night,” in a manner that adds a cherry on top of their energetic sound. What starts out as calm guitar strumming erupts into a fit of funky, glittering romp. Ross glides his powerful voice across vivacious electric guitar and punchy bass in a hard-hitting fashion. The verses, layered with a puttering synth, paint a picture of infatuated bliss combated by encroaching fear of romantic abandonment. As the sum of all of these parts, the song stands as a brief (at just 2:32) but smooth continuation of the pair’s knack for effortlessly catchy and showy numbers. Sometimes, all you need is a song that’ll get your head nodding as you drive home after work or, better yet, into the sunset.
