The rollout for The 1975’s new album Notes on a Conditional Form has been going on for seemingly forever. It was last summer that we got the first taste with singles “The 1975” and “People” that signalled yet another era for the shape-shifting Manchester band. Those two tracks were followed by the U.K garage-inspired “Frail State of Mind,” the twangy country-emo “The Birthday Party,” the 90s-throwback “Me and You Together Song,” and most recently the evocative duet “Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America” that features Phoebe Bridgers. It’s been a lot of singles over a very long time, and somehow we still have only heard less than a third of the album.
Today they’ve let loose single #6, and it might be the best off of the album so far. “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)” has been making the rounds online since they started playing it on tour earlier this year, and fans have taken hold of the track as a lovely boost of serotonin given the suffocating nature of our times. It’s an over the top, 80s-indebted track that one could argue as the closest to “The 1975” sound, and it’s utterly fantastic. Here’s to hoping that we can see them play it on the road sooner than later because this feels like a great addition to the pantheon of live bangers within The 1975’s discography.
