Sumo Cyco is no stranger to disruption. With a genre-bending approach that slams together metal, punk, and pop with unrelenting force, the Ontario trio’s latest single “Villains” is a burst of energy. For fans of bands like Poppy, Jinjer, or even early No Doubt, “Villains” is another sharp evolution from a band that refuses to stay in one lane.
From the jump, “Villains” barrels forward on a wave of guitar riffs and industrial-tinged grooves, anchored by frontwoman Skye Sweetnam’s searing vocal performance, it grabs you by the collar and drags you into the chaos of Cyco City.
Co-written and produced by Sweetnam and guitarist Matt Drake alongside Salvatore Sam Guiana (Silverstein, Neck Deep), the song interrogates the fine line between heroism and villainy, and how public perception can twist identity into something grotesque.
“The track poses a question,” says lead singer Skye who co-founded Sumo Cyco with Drake. “How do we show up in other people’s stories? Could we be the villains without realizing it? It’s tongue-in-cheek but rooted in real discomfort, about privilege, corruption, and the spectacle we’re all part of. I love writing lyrics that end in a question mark, because they make you stop and think.”
