In 2020, Persian-American pop artist Shab was described as the “breakout star of the global pandemic.” She had five consecutive #2 spots on Music Week’s British Commercial Pop Charts that year, which put her in a solid position for the release of her debut album, Infinite Love. The album received much love and acclaim from fans and critics, but it wasn’t until 2023 when Shab’s global pop status was redefined. She dropped “VooDoo” with hip-hop artist Fat Joe, which broke into the Top 40 on the Rhythmic and Pop Music charts and became the “Most Shazamed” song on Apple Music.
Her success is remarkable, but not as remarkable as her life story. In February, Shab told her story on her sophomore album, One Suitcase, a 21-track project that gets into her past. Through songs like “Alchemy” and “One Suitcase,” she opens up about fleeing from Iran as a refugee and adapting to life in America. Other tracks like “Euphoric” and “Santa Maria” focus on living with love and purpose. Alongside the release of the album, Shab announced that she is an ambassador for the UK-based charity Choose Love and that all proceeds from One Suitcase will be donated to the organization.
Recently, Shab went on a radio tour around the U.S. in support of the album, where she was able to tell her story more extensively. But now, with the summer coming up, Shab is switching gears and tapping into her playful side. She is releasing “Lipstick” as a single from One Suitcase, which leans into independence and femininity.
On “Lipstick,” Shab knows that she is irresistible. She totally owns who she is, as told in the opening lines, “Unlock the door, I’m coming over dressed in red / And full disclosure, secret’s out, I’m in your head.” Meanwhile, the bright textures of the track take over, immersing listeners in an 80s world full of lively synth, playful riffs, and cool beats. When we get to the choruses, Shab sings, “Oh / And I know, and I know, and I know it feels good / Don’t it feel good?” with her lush vocals. Overall, it’s confident without being too dominant, and empowering without being too powerful.
