Sasha & The Bear have returned from a year of traveling and recording in remote locations with their newest single, “Air.” A song about sitting in grief, the indietronica vibe will peak the interest of fans of BETWEEN FRIENDS and The Japanese House.
There is a focus on a delicate atmosphere from the start, with heavy reverb creating an ethereal soundscape. Pushing the single forward is a peddling guitar that cuts through the echos and washes in the background, with filtered drums adding to the song’s softness. Vocal doubles in the chorus only further add to this tone.
Drawing on his experience as an electronic producer, Dov Igel (one half of the duo) adds reversed reverbs as decoration as “Air” builds into the final chorus, creating the final touch to the dreamlike soundscape.
Sasha Daniel looks after most of the vocals on this song, delivering soft-spoken lines about grief. The chorus’s “I held onto to what? The rim, the rust” highlights the ever-long effects of holding onto mourning. Sasha & The Bear address this irony implicitly with the line “grief’s got a crooked smile,” showing a want to move forward but an inability to do so. The lyrics match well with the instrumentation, giving us a somber tone against the whimsical sounds.
Sasha & The Bear’s “Air” is expected to be featured on the tracklist of their upcoming debut album, releasing later this year. The song’s stillness and quiet heartbreak gives hints into the upcoming album’s themes of distance and grief whilst standing well on its own as a single.
