Sam Smith has revealed the To Be Free: San Francisco Residency that will take place at the historic Castro Theatre for its long-awaited reopening that follows the two years of renovations that took place. The city’s LGBTQ+ cultural epicenter will host Smith for an eight-night residency.
Smith is set to take over Castro Theatre starting on Feb. 10th and will wrap up the residency on Feb. 21st. The general sale for tickets begins on Oct. 7th, but pre-sale sign-ups are available now.
When speaking on the residency, Smith said:
“I LOVE San Francisco and The Castro especially has been so central to the Queer community here over the years. These shows will also celebrate the official reopening, so it’s truly an honour to become part of this iconic venue’s history.”
Alongside the announcement, Sam Smith shared a cover of the classic “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers with a video that was filmed at the Castro Theatre and in the district that surrounds it. Sam used their haunting vocals to create a performance that could create goosebumps for anyone listening to it. Viewers are greeted by the theatre, which still has the scaffolding from the construction, but are then met by friendly faces within the community.
Starting Oct. 8th, Sam Smith will also be taking over The Warsaw in New York City for a 24-show residency. This one started at 12 shows, but due to high demand 12 more shows were added. This has many fans wondering if Smith will add dates to the San Francisco residency, as well.
