There is something very special about the way that music can bring people together, and Rye LaChance is on a mission to unite. She wants others to feel less alone when they hear her songs, and she does this by sharing real stories. Last month, for instance, she released “My Father and Me,” which touched on her evolving relationship with her parents—mostly with her father. Anyone who has ever changed their views for the better on their parents after gaining some life experience can relate to this track, making it a universal ode to growing up. In her next single, Rye continues to describe her home life and how it affects her relationships.
On “Bad For You,” Rye finds a connection between how she acts in a relationship and the way she was raised. In the beginning of the track, she observes, “Growing up at the expense of a father who never called his own bluff,” establishing some issues with vulnerability. After giving more backstory, she then tells an honest confession with, “That’s why I am the way I am.” The rich folk tones of her voice pop against the summery string lines and acoustic strums, adding a rawness and a vulnerability to the words. In the end, she reveals, “I thought I’d hit rock bottom / But I kept losing altitude / Convinced I’m not the problem / When I never showed you gratitude / But I still have it bad for you.”
On social media, Rye shares,
“‘Bad For You’ felt like it spilled out so naturally, that within four hours, we had written the entire song and recorded a demo. It was my first real collaborative writing experience, and it was fun, but the demo was tucked away and I never intended on using it for my own personal writing project.”
