ROLE MODEL and Laufey’s vocals are a match made in heaven on “The Longest Goodbye”

Date:

In a surprise announcement on his Instagram, indie rock up-and-comer ROLE MODEL, also known as Tucker Pillsbury, told the world he would be releasing a special edition of his track “The Longest Goodbye” with a very special guest. This track is a pensive, Southern-inspired acoustic post-breakup song off his smash hit deluxe album, Kansas Anymore: The Longest Goodbye.

Pillsbury performed this song, along with his other deluxe album tracks, like the iconic “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out,” on the later dates of his No Place Like Tour US leg. When he performed “The Longest Goodbye” on the second night of his tour stops in Los Angeles, he welcomed Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter sensation Laufey to perform it with him onstage as a special surprise, to the elation of the audience of Divas (the self-given name for fans of Pillsbury).

About three months later, the song was professionally recorded and released on Wednesday, July 10th. Laufey’s bewitchingly silky vocals elevate the already delightfully bittersweet track, and Pillsbury’s intimate acoustic guitar allows the pair’s singing talents to take center stage. The production and melody evoke a feeling of listening to a heartbroken cowboy strum a somber song on his acoustic guitar in the quiet saloon of a crackly old Western movie.

Lyrically, the song describes the sorrowful conclusion one comes to after the fights, tears, misery, and the eventual heavy-hearted acceptance of a miserable breakup. This feeling is expressed within poignant lyrics such as “But you told me you’d hold me, forget the matrimony / I don’t think I love you anymore.”

Pillsbury’s country influences in his indie-rock tracks make him a noticeable standout within the sub-genre that fans all over the world have fallen in love with. The inclusion of Laufey’s sheer vocal mastery transform the song into a pensive, wistful duet of two broken hearts.
