Rex & The Rhythm Pens a Powerfully Honest Breakup Anthem on “Without You”

Date:

Rex & The Rhythm grew up fully immersed in the music scene of Barbados. Whether he was hanging out at Eddy Grant’s studio or opening for Rihanna with his Carib-pop band Cover Drive, Rex hit the gas pedal with full force from the very start. His new single “Without You” is about an all-consuming breakup that bleeds into every aspect of his life. Rex & The Rhythm grapples with coping mechanisms and the bad habits that often fill the emptiness inside us in the aftermath of heartbreak.

“Without You” ignites the ear with high-flying harmonies, vibrant notes of electric guitar, and grounded percussion that reverberates through your core. He sings, “So I’ll bury my sorrows in a bottle / Dance around scars / Live life full throttle.” The track drew influence from an Anderson .Paak breakup rumor that surfaced during the peak of Rex’s breakup. Drawing both sonic and emotional parallels between himself and Anderson .Paak on “Without You”, the track is a powerhouse of raw emotion.

Revealing more on his track, Rex & The Rhythm confides, “‘Without You’ is about how dull life feels post a serious relationship and the vices we turn to or in some cases abuse, to make us feel better and make the grief we feel lighter. The questions we ask like, ‘how long will it take me to get over this?’ and, ‘Why is it so damn hard?’ I wanted something universally relatable in the hook while using imagery in the verses staying in the world of Andy and Silk Sonic’s sauce.”

Rex & The Rhythm is currently based in Los Angeles, but continues to keep his Barbados roots in tact. In 2022, Rex opened for Ashanti in Barbados at The Hennessy Artistry festival. “Without You” is Rex & The Rhythm’s latest release demonstrating new depths of emotionality, all driven by his iconic vocal.
