PHILDEL reflects on an uneven relationship on “Monument to Life”

Date:

Early in the summer, PHILDEL released “Wild as Sin” and immersed us in a dreamy, cinematic world. The single touched on the complexities of love, like how it can be incredibly wild, brutal, and resilient. All the while, PHILDEL graced us with her striking piano skills, using dramatic chords to add emotional depth and forward motion to the song. In the end, it was a wild ride, but the ride is not over yet. PHILDEL is heading out on a headline tour of the UK in September, but before she does so, she gives us “Monument to Life.”

A stirring piano ballad, “Monument to Life” explores heartbreak and fear. Guided by ethereal piano lines, PHILDEL explains how she loved and stood by someone who never really loved her in return. Her angelic and folksy vocals stand out against the moving piano melodies as she reflects, “And it took all the strength I had / ‘Cause you will never love me back.” It leads her to ask, “Is love a thing I owe?” It can be a shock to realize that your efforts never made an impact, but PHILDEL handles these feelings with a strength that can only inspire.

About “Monument to Life,” PHILDEL shares,

“This is about the isolating feeling of loving someone who isn’t capable of loving you back despite the loyalty and love that you show them, leaving you questioning if you’ve ever known love at all. And then finally pulling yourself away and realizing…it’s not unlike the feeling of losing a button down a crack. That relationship held so little love for you, and over time, it becomes clearer that the true loss is actually quite small.

“I really enjoyed arranging the rippling strings and composing the piano part for this song—there is something very natural in the way it all came together. Something about the pace of it means that when I sing and play it, I feel such a deep sense of freedom…perhaps that’s the freedom of being liberated from an unbalanced relationship.”
