In anticipation for their upcoming debut album, And I’d Do It Again (out Jan. 30, 2026), London’s Only The Poets have released their new single “Thinking Bout Your Ex.” With indie-pop sensibilities against heartfelt lyrics, this song will be give listeners of 5SOS, Ruel and The Wombats a new addition to their playlists.
“Thinking About Your Ex” has a light tone and mood despite the fear in the lyrics. The acoustic guitar that starts off the single has a slightly harsh quality to its metal strings, ensuring a rock tonality throughout. A mix of live and machine drums adds to the pop and rock blend with distinctive tones from both drum sets. The simple pop structure of the instrumentation is slightly spiced up in the chorus, with a melodic synth following the vocals, giving some shine to the mix. A warm bass line gives some contrast from the metallic tones. While the song’s instruments are simplistic, the highlight is definitely the lyrics.
Being with someone who’s “too good to be true” causes insecurity for Only The Poets with journal-like lyrics that put emotion at the forefront. Still, the post chorus’s “How could he give you up,” emphasises how this fear of losing this person comes from a place of love. By keeping the focus of the lyrics on emotion, the band connects with listeners more easily, giving “Thinking About Your Ex” its soft indie-pop tonality.
Only The Poets’ fanbase continues to grow and “Thinking Bout Your Ex” further cements the group’s indie-pop sound. If you’re hoping to hear the latest single live, the London-based band is currently touring across the US in support of The Wombats.
