The ghost of past connections: Sleeping Wolf’s new single “Death of a Friend”

Date:

You can feel the anguish, the devastation, and anxiety layered underneath the newest, and beautifully heavy, single “Death of a Friend” by rock duo Sleeping Wolf.

The duo, created by Jake Newton and Steven Solomon in 2014, began their musical partnership with the release of their debut single “The Wreck Of Our Hearts.” Influenced by bands like Nine Inch Nails, CHVRCHES, and Jimmy Eat World, Sleeping Wolf has established a solid fan base throughout the years, especially with their their first few EPs released in 2015, gaining over 40 million streams globally. Additionally, the band has had singles appear in TV and movies, namely, Netflix’s Mission Blue, The Vampire Diaries and You’re Not You.

This track, “Death of a Friend,” was actually written during a time of devastation. Dedicated to their craft, the Sleeping Wolf members wrote this song in the spring of 2025 after staying up all night during a hurricane. The song itself dives into the theme of drifted friendships. In an Instagram caption, the band wrote:

“sometimes, we lose friends due to distance, arguments, or even death. but sometimes we drift apart so gradually that by the time we realize it, they’re no longer recognizable to us. the person we once knew is gone, and with them, a part of ourselves.”

Much more is to be anticipated from this unique band as more and more fans begin to discover their talents.
