Royal & the Serpent has just released the latest single from her upcoming debut album and teases an eye-catching music video to go along with it.

The newest installment in Royal’s discography, “Steering (So Fast),” is a heartfelt expression of her signature emotional transparency, delving into both youthful optimism and insecurities at once. This track has the raw intimacy and modern feel that is just the right combination to make it timeless. It is an engaging followup to last month’s double singles “Favorite Person” and “Fiona” that’ll have listeners counting down the days until the album releases for another taste from the album’s narrator “R”.

Speaking on the release, Royal shared, She’s about being terrified and scared and wanting to be proud and moving forward and moving quickly and moving incorrectly and feeling like you’re not keeping up and feeling hopeful all at once.” She continues:

“‘Steering (So Fast)’ was written between the hours of 1 am and 4 am on my living room floor. My boyfriend was fast asleep next to me. He’d been playing the chords before he drifted off. I snagged the guitar and didn’t put my pen down until I was proud. I got to finish it with one of my best friends and longest collaborators (Overwhelmed, Weddings & Funerals, Salvador Dali) – Marky Style. This song feels like home. She’s surprising and confronting and fearfully bold. She’s what wanting and yearning and chasing and failing feels like. I love her.”

This release follows last week’s announcement that Royal & the Serpent has been added to London’s All Points East festival lineup, set to appear on Sunday, August 30th.

“Steering (So Fast)” will be the sixteenth track of Royal’s debut album Emptiness is Godly, expected to arrive May 8th via Atlantic records. The album can be pre-saved and preordered here, with “Steering (So Fast)” now streaming everywhere.
