Paris Paloma is not your “Good Girl”

Date:

Paris Paloma has never been one to shy away from the hard-hitting topics that impact women today. Her newest single, “Good Girl” is no different. In it, she takes a step away from her usual acoustic sound and instead uses a more techno beat as she takes another stab at how society skews women’s images of themselves: “How clever to make a girl’s own face the enemy / In the half-light, she’ll agonize to be evergreen / A ‘Good girl always look and never be.'”

The music video released alongside the single features Richard Armitage as a sculptor and Paloma as a statue that comes to life. We see her haunting her creator until she finally comes to life and agonizes over what it means to be a human woman. At one point, Armitage picks up a camera to record her, wielding it like a weapon until Paloma grabs it and turns it back on him.

“’Good Girl’ is the gnawing, thrashing bid for freedom from the male gaze, from judgment of my body, from looking inward to myself instead of dancing openly in defiance of those who would shame my body.”

Stream “Good Girl” now.
