mercury’s “Heaven” is an ode to sentimental thinkers

Indie-rock band mercury is back with “Heaven,” a reflective single that portrays the difficulty of letting past experiences go.

Produced by Alex Farrar and written by Maddie Kerr and Chris Peranich (guitarist), “Heaven” is a five-minute track that draws listeners in with a soft guitar riff and lyrics that convey the idea of running away from something that no longer serves you: “I ran / I had to go / When I lost it / At the sight of your road / Try, try to forget / How it felt like heaven.”

The following verse showcases acceptance and understanding of how a strenuous situation can impact you: “Throwing my hands up, I accept it all / Something’s got a hold on / Going, going, going / It never stops / Something’s got a hold on me.” Kerr compares running away from a complicated hardship to heaven, a cosmological place where positive souls reside.

As the song progresses, Kerr sings in the final verse “You had me in a mold / On a Thursday, outside in the cold / How could I forget? / It was nothing like heaven.” In contrast to the previous lyric, Kerr explains her thought process when coming into contact with someone who was destructive. This emphasizes how that actually didn’t feel like heaven to her — the utopian place she created in mind the moment she felt free.

Hailing from Tennessee, mercury is a project created by lead singer Maddie Kerr. Her inspiration in creating music stems from one of her favorite alternative-rock bands, Mazzy Star.

Influenced by artistry in childhood, Kerr goes more in-depth on songs she’s written thus far via the band’s official website, explaining, “It’s a sense of self-reflection, and subsequent relinquishing to the cascading waves of adversity that come into focus as we grow older. Writing these songs has been part of a journey of figuring out my emotions and telling myself that it’s okay to feel that way, to talk about it, to write about it.”

mercury will be hitting the road with Colony House for their North American tour starting next February. Tickets are available to purchase here.
