After teasing snippets on TikTok, Canadian alternative musician Jutes is back with a stunning new release. Most known for his viral single “Limerence,” which gained massive popularity on TikTok, the artist releases two new singles: “Kill or be Killed” and “Fly on the Wall.”
The new single “Kill or be Killed” can be interpreted as speaking about a toxic relationship in which one individual is struggling to escape the grasp their “lover” has on them — never being able to truly run away from their influence and seeing remnants of them in everything around you. The lyrics of verse two and the bridge represent this most clearly.
“Fly on the Wall” is melancholic. Angsty. Somber. Gut-wrenching. All of these words can be used to describe this hauntingly beautiful two-minute-and-47-second single. The song feels like blankly staring at the ceiling amidst the feeling of emptiness. It feels as though you’re spiraling, falling through an empty pitch-black sky into the void, contently yet apprehensively.
Filled with a slow tempo waltz and soft acoustic guitar chords alongside a powerfully shattering vocal reverb, it truly does feel as if you’ve become a fly on the wall, disassociated and disconnected with your body and reality around you. Desperately screaming, searching for some sort of aid, some sort of light at the end of the tunnel, listeners can envision such a scenario within the lyrics: “Do you hope that there’s a god / when you spiral down the drain / To a door you can’t unlock in a dark familiar place / Like I do, like I do.”
