There are moments in life when you need to make your own luck, and sure enough, this is exactly what Evening Elephants have done for their music career. The alt-punk duo, consisting of Sam Boggs and Brandon “B” Leslie, put on DIY backyard shows in LA and impromptu street takeovers in NYC, which made them stand out in the scene. Evening Elephants have now racked up over 65M streams, and their 2023 single “Snow on the Bluff” has picked up support from celebs like Nina Dobrev and Ana de Armas. With performances lined up at summer festivals like Lollapalooza and Electric Forest, Evening Elephants are now bringing their DIY ethos to the big leagues. They are also gearing up to release their debut album, which will ultimately set things up for the duo in a big way.
To kick off this album’s era, Evening Elephants have released “Simple Things.” A cool fusion of alt-pop, rap, and hip-hop, “Simple Things” gives a thrashy vibe that caters to Evening Elephants’ creativity and DIY spirit. Over the commanding beats and expansive melodies, we hear witty lines and pop culture references that will grab any listener’s attention. Lyrics like, “My cousin’s name was Saint Laurent / Her hotline bling but never ring / I’m holding onto simple things,” go by so fast but are intriguing, nonetheless.
In the visualizer below, which was directed by Reid Anderson and Chester Milton, Evening Elephants provide more to the story. We are brought to a grassy field late at night, where we find Sam and B. While Sam performs the song, he walks on a dirt road from the field and uses the lights on B’s truck to guide him. It all brings out the sense of finding life’s meaning, better preserving the narrative of the song.
