Australian indietronica duo Midnight Pool Party have returned with “WHAT AM I GONNA DO?”, a disco-pop track that explores the aching uncertainty of modern love. Released on July 15, the single is one of the bands most emotionally potent releases to date.
The song pulses with a classic Midnight Pool Party groove: smooth synths and rhythms that call to mind SG Lewis or Disclosure. But beneath the club-ready veneer is a conflicted narrator grappling with heartbreak in real time. “What am I gonna do now? / Should I go or stay?” frontman Darren Morilla asks in the chorus.
Inspired by a conversation between the duo’s members (Morilla and Oliver Dela Cruz) the lyrics draw directly from real-life relationship limbo: “You told me not to reach out / So now I’m starting to have my doubts / If anything I do will even matter — what’s the point?”
On the track,Morilla shares “This song is about questioning if you will wait for someone who isn’t sure that they want to be with you, or if you should just move on and do your own thing. After speaking with Ollie about recent events in his life, and personal issues, I (Darren) wanted to put myself in his shoes and write from his perspective. Although exaggerated in many ways, just like all our songs, it’s definitely inspired by real life events.”
