Los Angeles-based artist Maya Kuriel has shared “World Spinning,” an anthemic pop song that perfectly encapsulates the highs of living life to the fullest. The follow-up to “ALIBI,” her haunting single about a toxic relationship, this one finds Kuriel in a moment of bliss where she longs to relive her best nights out.
The singer-songwriter opens the track with sparse production and breathy vocals over a vocoder – reminiscent of Ariana Grande – while the chorus kicks in with a booming bass, instantly turning the song into the soundtrack to our own best summer nights. She keeps us hooked from beginning to end, with catchy melodies and lyrics that seem like second nature to her.
While Kuriel celebrates the carefree nature of being young, she also describes the nostalgia that follows, claiming that those nights have helped her figure out who she is. She sings in the post-chorus, “Lately I’m falling to pieces / Collecting myself, going one by one / Maybe it’s all that I needed / To find myself before the sun comes.”
At a time when pop fans are complaining about not having a song of the summer, Kuriel delivers not just a strong contender, but one that captures the feeling that makes those such memorable hits.
