Following the release of her EP, Makena is gracing the pop genre with her newest single “Self Sabotage.” This single is angsty and ethereal in the best combination possible for the commercial pop/alt scene. The melody is unique in its sound, giving very similar vibes to Billie Eilish’s “You Should See Me In A Crown.” The slow-tempo singing allows each word to be crisp and clear. There’s also a play on how the song is ultimately a letter to a future boyfriend.
Lyrically, the song stands out in how it’s pointing out all these issues that would be described as self sabotage, but she sings out “When fates align I’ll blame the gods / Could never be self sabotage.” This type of lyricism invites listeners to do some self reflection. There’s this layered duality in between the lines of a level of insecurity about being vulnerable wrapped up as a defense mechanism. Her vocals along with the lyrics have this tone of warning and urgency. It works really well in this case as it leaves the listener on the edge of their seat as they comprehend the lyrics.
The overall composition of the song is not one you’d typically imagine to pair with this kind of lyrics or theme. The sharp percussion and electric guitar give the track an alternative edge. There’s an assertiveness that takes center stage with the very poignant melody and urgent lyrics.
The track forces the listener to be hyper aware of the many ways “Self Sabotage” takes place. It’s human nature to want to and/or try to blame external factors before we blame ourselves, but Makena writing a letter to a future partner in this way adds a layer of self understanding that’s highlighted throughout the alt pop single.
