Mae Stephens crosses a relationship finish line on “Blue”

Date:

In August of 2024, Gold-certified British artist Mae Stephens presented fans with her debut EP, Securely Insecure. The project touched on themes like trauma and self-discovery, making it an intimate portrait of young adulthood that listeners could feel and understand on a personal level. As for 2025, Mae released singles “Woah Man!,” “Tiny Voice,” and “Done With U,” the latter of which showcased a sassy, alt-pop sound that perfectly set the tone for Mae’s upcoming chapter. She now gives us “Blue,” which further inserts us into this new era.

Living up to its name, “Blue” features a bluesy, bittersweet style that features electric guitar accompaniment and moody riffs. Here, Mae reunites with Dutch producer Morgan Avenue (Rita Ora, Cher Lloyd) and Jheynner Argote Frias, who co-produced the track. They also co-wrote the track with Mae, giving her the space to deliver an emotionally-driven vocal performance. Wrapped in a tender, aching texture, Mae sings, “You’re sweet, then you’re sour / We could argue for hours” and “You’ve crossed that blue line / You’ve wasted my time,” describing a relationship that has done its time. Telling us more about “Blue,” Mae explains,

“‘Blue’ has such a personal, unique touch to it! I’ve never heard of a blue line…have you? No… The ‘Blue Line’ is something I created, as sometimes anger just isn’t the way to go. Crossing a blue line results in disappointment and simply a means to an end. It’s fed up and tired of the same thing, drying up that last drop of hope you had for the other person or the relationship you share. Crossing a blue line, in my opinion, means the finish line and a sad end to the final chapter.

“We had so much fun creating this song and playing around with the structure, as ‘Blue’ has an intro leading into the first verse, which I’ve never done before! I remember recording so many versions of the chorus to find that perfect sweep of the melody that conveyed the level of emotion blue represents. There are so many technical things woven into this song that truly make it special, thanks to Mo and Jay—two absolutely incredible musicians!”

On March 18, Mae will embark on her U.K. tour, starting at the Norwich Arts Centre and ending at London’s The Lower Third on April 1. Tickets and the full list of dates can be found here.
