Back in July, Canadian singer-songwriter Maddisun released her third album, The Pages. Conventionally, artists will unleash new albums on digital platforms and through physical copies all at once, but Maddisun decided to release the project a little differently. In honor of her fans, of the classic vibe of the album, and of the way she first discovered music, she released The Pages on vinyl, CD, and cassette first. On October 2, after the album had time to settle with fans, Maddisun dropped it on streaming platforms. Each of its 12 tracks serve as “a page” on love, loss, growth, connection, and self-discovery, with Maddisun reflecting on personal experiences. She now brings these themes to life in her latest video for “Big Star,” a featured track from The Pages.
Written by Maddisun and produced by Jim Bryson, “Big Star” explores the timeless narrative of someone in pursuit of becoming a “big star.” Throughout, Maddisun clings to hope as she sings, “She’s dreaming of a life she knows she’ll have” and “Who’s got the power to say / How it’s gonna go, what’s coming her way?” In the end, she is “over looking over her shoulder” and ready to get what she wants.
The music video below leans into the country, Americana, and rock aspects of the song. We see Maddisun playing guitar in the trunk of her car, which is parked in an open, grassy field. She then uses her car as a dressing room, complete with vanity lights. Later on, she emerges all dressed up, but instead of heading to a stage, she is heading to a huge star that stands tall in the field. You’ll have to watch to see what happens next, but I can assure you that the ending is fire.
About the significance of “Big Star” and the music video, Maddisun shares,
“This album is truly me in every sense of the word—from its writing to its creation. ‘Big Star’ specifically tackles the emotional cycle we run through as artists in the ongoing quest to ‘make it.’ For the video, I wanted to maintain the personal energy of the project by self-producing a video—starring myself and my 1976 Chevy Chevette—that could reflect the timeless vibes of the song and reinforce the album’s core themes.”
