In March, just as trees were starting to bloom and flowers were starting to blossom, so too was Luke Marzec. The British multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer released a collection of songs that made up half of his upcoming debut album, in a project called Something Good Out of Nothing (Part A). The four tracks, including the highly acclaimed “Growing Up With You” and “I Can’t Get You Out of My Mind,” focused on themes of memory and nostalgia, all accompanied by Luke’s rich and creative blend of jazz and electronica music. On August 15, the rest of the album will be released through five additional tracks. These tracks are set to dive into themes of resistance, possibility, and imagination, rounding out one expansive project. Last month, Luke released the first single from the second part of the album, which was “Space To Be Free.” It leaned into collective liberation and release, serving as a relevant and cathartic anthem. Luke now touches on personal liberation with “Broken Promises.”
On “Broken Promises,” Luke encourages others to embrace life. To live as much as possible. To break out of their comfort zone. His soulful and emphatic vocals are full of support as he sings, “You’re finally finding your feet again / We’ll meet again / I’ll find you on the other side of the world someday.” He continues, “Wouldn’t do / Wouldn’t take / Couldn’t see / Couldn’t wait till the morning,” implying that the time for a fresh start is right now. All the while, comfy drum beats, easy-going horns, and pleasant piano help soothe and relax any anxious soul.
About the single, Luke explains,
“I could see a couple of lost friends not knowing their way, and leading others astray with them. This is a song about new beginnings, leaving the past behind and looking forward to a better day.”
He adds,
“And although I know that to confront the issues in your life—to learn from your mistakes and to live a better life—I know that that requires introspection and to work on yourself, and it’s a long and steady road, but there’s another part of me that thinks…sometimes it might just be your surroundings. Maybe you can get bored. Maybe when you’re bored, you end up not living properly, and you end up making mistakes… But if you live life with adventure, if you do jump on that plane, go to the other side of the world, experience a new place, and get excited by life again, maybe that really could be the catalyst that will get you to be excited about life, to smell the roses, to take life by the horns, and ultimately become a better you. Life really is an adventure.”
